More about the honors boards at Lord’s-2

We now look at the honors boards in England’s dressing room.

A total of 129 centuries were made for England:

Eng-century at Lord's-1

Eng-century at Lord's-2

Eng-century at Lord's-3

The most centuries by an English batsman are 6 each by Gooch and Vaughan.

Centuries in both innings were made by Gooch (333 and 123 v Ind in 1990) and Vaughan (103 and 101* v WI in 2004). Gooch’s 333 is also the only Test triple century at Lord’s. This was also the first instance of a triple century and century in a first-class match. Some years later Sangakkara repeated this in a Test against Bangladesh.

The next highest score for England here is 240 by Hammond v Aus in 1938.

Those who scored a century on debut were Hampshire (107 v WI, 1969), Strauss (112 v NZ, 2004) and Prior (126* v WI, 2007).

Next we look at the 95 five-fors by England:

Eng-5wi at Lord's-1

Eng-5wi at Lord's-2

Eng-5wi at Lord's-3

The most five-fors are 8 by Botham followed by 5 each by Anderson and Trueman. Anderson may yet add to this.

The best performance here is 8-34 by Botham vs Pakistan in 1978, and he also scored a century in that match. Eight-wicket hauls have been made on 4 occasions by Botham (twice), Verity and Underwood.

There are numerous cases of five-fors in both innings. The most recent instance was by Woakes vs Pak in 2016.

It seems to be easier for debutants to take a five-for than to score a century at Lord’s. Here are those who took a five-for on debut:

Eng-5wi on debut at Lord's

Cork has the best figures here. No one has taken five-fors in each innings on debut.

And finally, we look at the rather shorter list of the 17 who took 10wm for England:

Eng-10wm at Lord's

Underwood is the only one to do so twice.

Verity’s 15-wicket haul is the best here.

Bedser is the only one to do so on debut.

And MM Ali is the only English player to score a fifty and take a ten-for in a Test at Lord’s. He finished the match with a hat-trick.

There are some who have scored both a century and a five-for at Lord’s (though not always in the same Test):

Eng-100 and 5wi at Lord's

Botham (108 and 8-34 v Pak in 1978) is the only one to do so in the same Test.

Those who scored both a century and ten-for at Lord’s:

Eng-100 and 10wm at Lord's

None of them scored a century and took 10 wickets in a match (in fact, this has happened only 3 times in all Tests, Botham being the first to do so.) Oddly enough, Allen and Broad scored their only Test centuries at Lord’s.

Finally, in the third part, we will look at the boards for visiting teams.

Review of England-West Indies Tests-1

The England-West Indies series of 2017 was won by England 2-1. It marked a comeback of sorts for the West Indies who won their first Test in England since 2000. They have not won a Test series in England since 1988, which was termed as a politically incorrect “dark greywash” as they won only by 4-0, instead of the 5-0 “blackwash” margins in 1984 and 1985-86.

Since then the West Indies have won some series against England at home, but never in England. They did draw in 1991 and 1995.

We now look at overall performances:

Eng-WI results

The West Indies still enjoy an overall 55-48 lead, though they do seem to enjoy a strong home advantage.

Coming to individual performances:

Batting:

Most runs (1000 or more):

Runs

Only Cook among current players has crossed 1000, besides Chanderpaul from recent times.

Sobers has the most centuries (10) followed by Headley and Richards (8 each). A few English players including Cook have made 6.

Richards and Sobers have the most fifty-plus scores (23) followed by Chanderpaul with 21. Boycott has the most for England (20).

Highest innings (175 or more):

Innings

Lara and his two world records at St John’s lead the way, while Sandham’s 325 was the first-ever triple century in Tests. Cook’s 243 is the only innings in this list from the current series, while Root had made 182* in 2015.

During the current series SD Hope made 147 and 118*, his first two Test centuries. Oddly enough they were the first instance of centuries in both innings at Headingley in over 500 first-class matches.

Batting averages (Minimum 20 innings and 35.00):

Batting average

Inevitably, Cook and Chanderpaul are the only current and near-current players here.

Bowling:

Most wickets (35 or more):

Wickets

Dominated by the long-serving Ambrose and Walsh. Anderson and Broad are further down.

The most 5wis are 8 by Ambrose and 7 by Gibbs. Trueman has the most for England with 6.

The most 10wms are 2 by Ambrose, Gibbs, Trueman and Valentine. Valentine’s 11-wicket haul was on debut, in the only Test the West Indies lost in the epochal 1950 series.

Best innings bowling (including all cases of 7wi and above):

Innings bowling

Anderson’s career best 7-42 is here along with Stokes’s from this series.

Best match bowling (including all cases of 10wm and above):

This includes Anderson’s 9-73 from the current series. There is also CS Marriott’s 11-wicket haul in his only Test, which is the only case of a bowler taking 10 or more wickets in his only Test.

Best bowling averages (Minimum 2000 balls, 35.00 or less):

Bowling avg

Again dominated by the WI fast bowlers of the 1980s. though Anderson and Broad also figure here.

Garner (17.93) and Ambrose (18.79) have the best averages.

But the spin pair of Valentine (1.78) and Ramadhin (1.84) have the best economy rate.

Marshall (45.5) and Holding (46.7) have the best strike rates.

To be continued.

Pink-ball Test records

A total of five day-night Tests (or pink-ball Tests) have been played until now. All 5 have had results:

Results

It can be seen that all 5 Tests have been won by the hosts (if you consider Pakistan to be the host at Dubai).

While we do not have enough of a sample set to seriously look at aggregates and averages, we can certainly look at innings and match performances. We start with

Batting: Highest innings (50 and above):

Innings above 50

There are already an impressive array of centuries including a double and a triple.

Bowling: best innings bowling (4wi and above):

Bowling-innings

Bishoo’s 8-for did not help his side to win, though Hazlewood’s 6wi did.

Bowling: best match bowling (6wm and above):

Bowling-matches

Bishoo and Hazlewood lead once again. Bishoo has the only 10wm so far.

Fielding: best innings fielding (3 dismissals or more):

AR-match

Only one instance, with Starc making 53 and 4-80.

England-South Africa Tests (2017)-1

With this 3-1 victory, the complete record of the 149 Tests between these teams shows England leading 61-33 with 55 draws.

In England, England lead 30-14 with 24 draws.

In SA, England still lead SA 31-19 with 31 draws.

It may be more useful to look at the record after South Africa returned to international cricket. The first Test series between these teams in the new era was in 1994.

For Tests in 1994 and later:

47 Tests have been played. The teams are matched 15-15 with 17 draws.

In England, they are again matched 9-9 with 6 draws.

In SA, they are yet again matched 6-6 with 11 draws. Truly symmetric.

However, this was England’s first series win against SA in England since 1998. In between they had won two out of four series in SA. In the same period SA won one series in England and two were drawn.

We now look at individual performances.

Batting:

Most runs (1000 and above):

Most runs

Amla has the highest total among current players, with de Villiers and Cook some distance behind. The first few on this list are from the distant past.

Kallis has the most centuries (8) while several others have 7. Amla with 6 has the most centuries among current players.

Mitchell has the most 50-plus scores (23) followed by Hammond and HW Taylor (20). Amla with 13 has the most among current players.

Highest individual scores (160 and above):

Highest innings scores

While Amla holds the record of 311*, the only high score listed in the current series is 190 by Root. Stokes (258) holds the record for England.

Highest batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, minimum 35.00):

Bat Avg

Again dominated by the old-timers, while Amla, de Villiers and Cook are the only current players.

To be continued.
