Review of SA-England Tests-1

England won the series 3-1, after losing the first Test.

This gives us the following summary of Tests between the two teams:

We see that England leads 64-34 overall and 34-20 in SA. Remember that SA was a rather weak team in the initial years (when they, England and Australia were the only Test teams).

 

Since SA’s re-admission in 1991, England’s lead has shrunk to 18-16, with 9-7 in SA.

Coming to the World Test Championship, SA got 30 points from the first Test and England 90 from the next three. However, SA were found to have bowled 3 overs short in the 4th Test and lost 6 points. So the final result was:

This was the first time a team in this WTC series has been docked points for a slow over rate.

England is still a distant third after India and Australia. SA continue in 7th place.

Also note that Kallis has the most centuries (8) followed by several with 7.The most 50+ scores are by B Mitchell (23) and HWTaylor and WR Hammond with 20.

Old-timers Mitchell and Taylor have the most runs. From the current series, there is only Root (1164) and Stokes (1028). From recent times there are also Amla (1903) and Cook (1263).

Highest individual scores (175 and above):

Here the top scorers Amla and Smith are from recent times.

This was a low-scoring series with no scores above 175. The highest in recent years was 258 by Stokes in 2015-16 followed by 201 by Amla in the same series.

Led by Hammond and Hobbs from long ago. We see Root and Stokes have the highest averages among current players, besides Amla from the recent past.
