The history of pink-ball Tests

India and Bangladesh play their first day-night Test at Kolkata from Nov 22.

A total of 11 day-night Tests have been played till now:

India and Bangladesh are the last of the original 10 Test teams to play with the pink ball. Even Zimbabwe has played one such Test, though it lasted only 2 days.

Each of these 11 Tests has had a result.

Highest innings scores (90 and above):

Batting under lights cannot be that difficult as we already have a triple century, a double century as well as a near-double century.

The best innings bowling is by Bishoo, although his team lost that match.

Best match bowling (including all 8wm):

Bishoo’s 10-for is also close to the best performance here. Cummins has the best match performance in the last day-night Test before this.

Best innings fielding (4 dismissals and above):

Wade is the only one with 5 dismissals, and Kusal Mendis has the most (4) by a non-keeper.

de Villiers is the only keeper with 8 dismissals, and Kusal Mendis the only non-keeper with 5 dismissals.

All-round performance (50 and 5wi in match):

Dilruwan Perera has 58 and 5-98, and Jason Holder has 74 and 5-41 which are better figures.

The most 5wis are 6 by Herath and Starc. The most 10wms are 2 by Warne and Starc.

Cummins has the best figures among current players.

Best match bowling (9wm and above):

In this series, Cummins (10-62 at Brisbane) and Starc (10-100 at Canberra) surpassed the previous mark for Australia vs Sri Lanka at home. It was earlier held by Siddle (9-104 at Hobart in 2012).

Vaas and Warne have the best economy rates.

Gilchrist and Healy have the most catches by a keeper (32) and Gilchrist also has the most stumpings (5). The most catches by a non-keeper are 20 by M Jayawardene. Only Kusal Mendis represents current players here with 12 dismissals.

This time Hayden has the most catches by a fielder with 4.

Healy and Gilchrist yet again, while Hayden’s 7 catches as a non-keeper were a share in the world record at that time.

We now move on to Bowling:

Most wickets (25 and above):

Lyon leads among current players, followed by Ashwin, I Sharma, Jadeja (all above 50),  U Yadav, Hazlewood, Shami and Starc. Lyon has the most for Australia. Kumble has the most fivers (10) and Harbhajan the most tenners (3).

Best innings bowling (including all cases of 7wm and above):

The only instance from the current series is Cummins’ 6-27, though Lyon has done well in the last few years. JM Patel’s 1959 effort was the best for India in all Tests for many years).

Bumrah’s 9-86 is the only instance from the current series. O’Keefe had the best figures for Aus v Ind in 2017, although he is not part of the current team. Lyon also took 12 wickets on India’s last tour. Patel’s 14-wicket haul was a record for India for many years.

While Benaud of the 1950s has the best average, Jadeja and Hazlewood have the best averages among current players. Benaud also has the best economy rate of 1.94, while McGrath has the best strike rate of 50.1.

Now for fielding:

India’s RR Pant equalled a world record of dismissals in a match:

However, his predecessor WP Saha is close behind.

Gilchrist and Dhoni have the most dismissals, with Dhoni having the most stumpings. Gilchrist has the most catches by a wicketkeeper, with Dhoni and Haddin in second place. Dravid has the most catches by a non-keeper.

Led by Haddin and Pant. The most by a non-keeper is 5 by Srikkanth which is a share in the world record.

RR Pant now leads with a share in the world record, followed by Haddin and Dhoni. The most by a non-keeper is 6 by Whatmore and Mark Waugh.

Haddin leads here, followed by Gilchrist and Dhoni. The best by a non-keeper is by Mark Waugh.

Kapil Dev is the only genuine all-rounder here, and MG Johnson the best for Australia.

JJ Bumrah took 48 wickets in the calendar year of his debut, coming 3rd after Alderman (54 in 1981) and Ambrose (49 in 1988). The previous record for India was 40 by Doshi in 1979. A Dananjaya took 27 wickets in his debut calendar year.

The most fivers were 4 by Taijul and Miraz of Bangladesh and Holder of the West Indies. No one took more than one tenner.

The best effort by Maharaj was in a losing cause.

Maharaj also figures here with a 12-wicket haul when his side lost. Yasir Shah’s 14-wicket haul was the best in the UAE. He and Imran Khan are the only Pakistani bowlers to have taken 14 wickets in a match.

Bumrah has the best average and strike rate, while Anderson has the best economy.

de Kock and Paine lead, although Dickwella has the most stumpings. Kusal Mendis has the most catches by a non-keeper.

Newcomer Pant is the only one with 6 dismissals. SPD Smith has the most catches by a non-fielder, making him one of several to share this record in all Tests. Saha took 5 catches in each innings of a match.

Pant with 11 dismissals shared the world record with Russell and de Villiers. Earlier in the year Saha had an Indian record with 10 dismissals.

The most by a non-keeper was 7 by Rahul, in the only Test which India won on that series. Smith made 6 catches before being disgraced.
