Records of the T20 World Cup (2007-2021)-Part 2

Hope you have seen Part 1.

We now continue with individual performances in Bowling.

Most wickets (20 or more):

Shakib Al Hasan took over the record from Shahid Afridi in this edition.

Bravo, Ashwin and Starc are the next among current players. Ashwin and Jadeja are the only Indian players here.

Best innings bowling (includes all 5wi and above):

None of the top performance were from this edition, the best being A Zampa’s 5-19 and Mujeeb’s 5-20. Adil Rashid’s 4 wickets for 2 runs against the West Indies is almost as startling as Rangana Herath’s 5-3 against New Zealand in 2014. Also note 4-9 both by Shakib and Rashid Khan

Best bowling averages (minimum 500 balls bowled, all instances):

Shakib and Bravo are the only current players here.

S Ajmal and Shakib have the best averages.

Shakib and Afridi have the best economy rates.

S Ajmal and Shakib have the best strike rates.

As you can see, Indian players do not figure in the last two lists.

Now for Fielding.

Most dismissals (12 and above):

de Villiers and Dhoni share the top position here, while Mushfiqur, Guptill and Warner have the most dismissals among current players.

Some points of interest: de Villiers’s dismissals came both as keeper and non-keeper (7 catches as keeper, 2 stumpings and 23 catches as non-keeper).

Dhoni’s 32 dismissals is the most for a keeper (including 21 catches and 11 stumpings). However, Kamran Akmal (18) and Sangakkara (14) have more stumpings).

de Villers has the most (23) catches as a non-keeper. Next are Guptill and Warner.

Most dismissals in an innings (4 and above):

12 players have made 4 dismissals in an innings, MH Cross of Scotland being the only one in 2021.

Note the 4 stumpings by Kamran Akmal and D Ramdin.

D Sammy is the only one with 4 catches as a non-keeper.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.60 and above):

Mushfiqur has the best by a current player.

The “hybrid” de Villiers has the best average here.

Dhoni and Kamran Akmal share the best average for a keeper.

GJ Maxwell, Guptill and Warner have the best averages for non-keepers. They all played in the final of the 2021 edition.

Finally, All-round performance:

Overall (note the conditions in the table):

Shakib has by far the best performance here, with Shahid Afridi a distant second.

Bravo and Mohammad Nabi also represent the current players.

Match performance (30 runs and 3 wickets):

The best performances would be by Bravo, Watson (28 Sep 2012) and Shakib (21 Oct 2021).

There is also Hasaranga de Silva among current players.

No good performances by Indian players in this category.

Test bowlers who failed on debut-Revised (Jan 2018)

This post from late 2015 started getting more views in January, perhaps because they wanted to see how England’s debutant Mason Crane would fare. He does appear here, but has not set any records. But Adil Rashid had done so in 2015.

England’s Adil Rashid became the unlikely hero for England on the last day of the first Test against Pakistan, but not before he had set an unwanted Test record in the first innings-the worst innings bowling by a debutant. This is assuming that no wicket was taken.

(All statistics are up to Jan 17, 2018 after the Ashes series and the 2nd Test between SA and Ind).

Worst innings bowling on debut-no wicket and 100+ runs conceded:

He took over the record from Australia’s one-test player BE McGain, while India’s Pankaj Singh is a close third. A few well-known names appear here, such as RG Nadkarni, GOB Allen and even JR Thomson. Bangladesh’s Abul Hasan at least got a century at No 10 to compensate; oddly enough he scored 113 in that innings to go with his 0-113. A more recent addition was 0-102 by RL Chase of WI.

A more unwanted record would pertain to those who failed to take any wicket in the match (though in some cases only one innings was bowled):

Worst match bowling on debut-no wicket and 100+ runs conceded:

Here Pankaj Singh is in top place, surpassing Pakistan’s Sohail Khan and the better-known Aaqib Javed. McGain’s 0-149 in an innings gets him into 4th place here. Some famous names here include RG Nadkarni, MA Holding, HH Streak, GOB Allen and others we have met before such as Abul Hasan and JR Thomson. More recently RL Chase entered this list with his 0-102 (which was in a single innings).

Of course, one may be able to take a wicket or two and yet concede a large number of runs. Now we look at those who took wickets but conceded the most runs in an innings on debut:

Worst innings bowling on debut-150+ runs conceded:

Here the leader is a current Sri Lankan player S Randiv who took over the lead from Australia’s JJ Krejza in 2010. Mason Crane ends up in 5th position with his 1-193. Not many well-known players here, until you come to the bottom to the Australian who took one wicket (Ravi Shastri) on debut.

There are several who took expensive fivers on debut but had rather short careers (Krejza being a good example as he played only one more Test). Adil Rashid finds his place in the top half of this list.

And finally we look at the most expensive match bowling figures on debut:

Worst match bowling on debut- 190+ runs conceded:

A surprisingly large number of bowlers conceded 200 or more runs in the match on debut. These include the luckless Krejza with 12-358 in a Test lost by Australia. Another 10-for here is AL Valentine’s 11-204. The West Indies lost this Test, but in the next three Tests he and his “old pal of mine” Ramadhin combined to wreck England.

Rashid finds his place here towards the middle with 5-227.  Crane is also here with 1-193 (as he bowled in one innings). There are a few current players who are yet unproven (such as KV Sharma) but the only other well-known players are AA Mailey (6-200) and J Garner (6-190).

The Test debutants of 2015

Here we look at the players who made their Test debuts in 2015, and the highlights of their performances.

We start with batting, listing those who scored at least a fifty:

Only one centurion-but Adam Voges went on to cross 1000 by the end of the year. Ronchi played in only that one Test, Dowrich played in 2 and was not heard of again. Kusal Perera hit two fifties on debut but is now under a doping cloud. CR Brathwaite started promisingly in the end of the year and scored another lower-order fifty in the new year.

The best innings bowling figures (minimum 4 wickets):

The only five-for was by Rashid, after he took 0-163 in the first innings which is the worst innings bowling by a debutant. He played in 3 Tests of that series but did not go on the tour to South Africa. The others made steady progress without anything spectacular.

The best match bowling figures (minimum 6 wickets):

As mentioned above, these three bowlers progressed steadily.

Best innings fielding (minimum 4 dismissals)

Only Australia’s wicketkeeper Peter Nevill qualifies. He has held on to his place in the team.

Best match fielding (minimum 4 dismissals)

Ronchi and Ojha have not played Tests again, Nevill is thriving and Perera’s future is uncertain at least in the short term.

Best all-round performance of batting and fielding (mimimum 50 runs and 4 dismissals)

All three have not been fortunate, as mentioned above.

Best all-round performance of batting and bowling (minimum 20 runs and 2 wickets in match)

This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel-but these are the best all-round performances on debut which can be found. They have continued to play steadily without major scores in Tests.
