No 2 always tries harder (IPL)

Comparing the league table position with the final result of IPL from 2015 to 2018:

2015: The winner MI had come second in the league

2016: The winner RCB had come second in the league

2017: The winner MI had come first in the league

2018: The winner CSK had come second in the league

Reminds one of the famous advertising slogan of Avis which ran for a few decades:

Ads which have stood the test of time

Every adman dreams of an advertising slogan or visual which would be remembered for generations-and preferably simple. Here is one about Maytag products (one of many from the company with the same theme):

Then there was this public service ad of the US government (1987) which had become a catch-phrase by the late 80s, with its bare minimum dialogue:

It unconsciously inspires PJs even today:

A later version of the 1987 ad from 1997 is more elaborate but probably not so well-known:

Mad Avenue Blues and the mysteries of American Pie

Even if it didn’t make much sense to you, you would remember the original:

This is well known as one of the most incomprehensible pieces of pop music. The Wikipedia article has something on this and (in Further Reading) some links to scholarly articles trying to explain the nuances:

though it oddly gives a lot of importance to Madonna’s version:

Anyway, if you found this worthwhile you might like to hear a similar song by the same person about Wall Street-this time using Billy Joel. And the same song cropped up unexpectedly in Indian politics. More tomorrow.
