Summary of all England-India Tests-Sep 2021 (Pt 2)

Hope you have read Part 1.

Continuing with individual performances in Bowling:

Most wickets (40+):

Anderson has by far the most wickets. However, the most five-fors are by Chandrasekhar (8) followed by Ashwin and Botham with 6. Bedser is the only one with two ten-fors (which came in his first two Tests).

After Anderson and Ashwin, other current players include Broad, Ishant, Moeen and Jadeja.

Best innings bowling (including all case of 7wi or better):

The first few entries are from long ago, though Jadeja, Ishant and Broad are here. Ishant has the best figures for India in England (that too at Lord’s)

Best match bowling (including all cases of 10wm or better):

Interestingly, none of the two leading current Indian players (Ashwin and AR Patel) played in this series. Only Jadeja and Anderson represent the current players.

Best bowling averages (Minimum 2000 balls, maximum 35.00):

The best bowling averages are by Illingworth and Lever who played in relatively less matches. Anderson, Broad and Ashwin have the best averages among current players.

The best economy rates are by Illingworth and Nadkarni (who else?)

The best strike rates are by Lever and Willis.

Now for Fielding:

Most dismissals (30 or more):

Dhoni and Knott lead, although Kirmani has the most stumpings. Cook, Gavaskar and Dravid have the most catches by non-keepers.

Innings dismissals (5 or more):

Taylor and JT Murray lead, with current players Bairstow, Pant and Buttler bringing up the rear.

Yajurvindra has the most catches as a non-keeper, which came on his debut. He is still the only non-keeper to achieve this on debut.

Match dismissals (7 or more):

Led by RW Taylor, whose 10 was a Test record at that time.

There are Buttler (8). Bairstow, Pant and Rahul from among current players. Yajurvindra and Rahul have the best among non-keepers. Yajurvindra and Pant were making their debuts. Yajurvindra’s 7 catches are still the record by a fielder on debut.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.75):

Pant tops this list, with Buttler, Bairstow and Rahul among current players here.

Solkar and Rahul have the best dismissal rates among non-keepers.

Finally, all-round performances:

Overall (see criteria from table):

Ashwin has by far the best record here, with MM Ali and Jadeja the next among current players.

Unexpected names here include Borde and Shami.

Match performances (50 and 5wi):

Many outstanding feats here, notably Botham’s century and 13 wickets in 1980. There are also century/5wis by Mankad and Ashwin, and fifty/10wms by Lever and Jadeja. JK Lever remains the only one to achieve this on debut.

Botham, B Kumar and Ashwin appear here twice.

However, there was no such instance from this series.

India v England at Manchester

With a lead of 2-1, India has one more Test to play at Manchester on Sep 10-14.

Manchester and Birmingham are two of the major centres where India has never won a Test.

Manchester was also well-known for rain disruptions. Two Ashes Tests were completely washed out, while India were saved from a likely defeat in 1971 when the entire last day was washed out.

The full record of England vs India Tests at this venue:

England lead 4-0 with 5 draws.

Most runs (150 and above):

Not very meaningful as relatively few matches have been played here. Viswanath seems to be the only batter to have played 3 Tests here. No one has made more than one century here, while Gavaskar is the only one with 3 scores of 50+.

Highest innings (all centuries):

Azharuddin and Hammond have the highest scores here. Other famous names such as Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Atherton, Botham and Hutton all appear here.

Most wickets (8 and above):

Bedser and Trueman lead here. Bedser is the only one with a ten-for as well as two five-fors.

Best innings bowling (including all 6wi):

Trueman has by far the best innings bowling with 8-31. Oddly, Doshi has the best figures for India.

Best match bowling (8wm and above):

Bedser has the best figures of 11-93, having earlier taken 11 wickets against India on his debut at Lord’s. He is the only Test player to take 11 wickets in each of his first two Tests. Trueman was unfortunate not to get a 10-for after taking 8-31. L Amarnath took 8 wickets in his only match there. Bedser’s figures are the best for England against India at home.

Most dismissals (5 and above):

Knott has the most by a keeper, while the lesser-known JT Ikin has the most by a non-keeper.

All-round performance (50+ and 5wi):

Only one such instance, by the lesser-known P Lever in 1971. This came close to being a victory for England, but rain on the last day spoiled this.

One can expect the weather to play a major role in this Test.

Review of England-Pakistan Tests-2020-II

Hope that you have read Part I.

Before we get into bowling records in England-Pakistan Tests, we note the achievement of JM Anderson who became the first pace bowler to reach 600 wickets. Comparing with others who have crossed 500 wickets:

Here we have disregarded the ICC XI vs Aus Test, so the figures for Murali and Warne are less than what you will see in some sources.

Note that Broad with 514 has some chance of crossing 600.

Continuing with the main Bowling records:

Most wickets (25 or more):

Anderson and Broad follow Abdul Qadir, and may cross his record. Yasir Shah and Mohammad Amir are a little below.

Qadir has the most 5wi (8) as well as the most 10wm (4). No one else has more than one 10wm. Imran and Underwood have 4 5wis.

Best innings bowling (includes all cases of 7wi):

Qadir is the only one with 9wi. Botham’s 8-34 came along with a century.

Anderson also appears here.

Best match bowling (includes all cases of 10wm):

This time Underwood has the best figures followed by Qadir. Anderson, Woakes and Yasir Shah are also here.

Best bowling average (minimum 2000 balls, all cases):

Anderson leads this table with Broad somewhat below.

Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah are also here.

The best economy rates are by Iqbal Qasim and DA Allen.

The best strike rates are by Waqar Younis and Anderson.

Now for fielding records:

Most dismissals (20 or more):

Led by Wasim Bari and followed by Kamran Akmal.

Wasim Bari and Sarfaraz Ahmed have the most stumpings (4).

Root has the most catches by a non-keeper (22) although 3 others have 20.

Most dismissals in an innings (5 or more):

A few non-keepers have 4 catches in an innings.

Most dismissals in an match (7 or more):

Bari and Akmal again lead this. The best by non-keepers are 6 by Greig and Hick.

Highest dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.600):

Knott has by far the best average here. Root and Trescothick have the best averages for non-keepers.

All-round performances:

Overall (see criteria in table):

Here Broad does better than Botham. Strange that Imran does not meet these criteria.

Match (Fifty and 5wi):

Imran does appear here twice. The best performances include those by Botham (100+5wi) and Qadir (50+10wm).

This list includes Arnold, Qadir and Ajmal who would not usually be considered all-rounders.
