Performances after the first 10 pink-ball Tests

The first day/night (or pink-ball) Test was played between Australia and New Zealand in November 2015.

Since then a total of 10 such Tests have been played, ending with the one between the West Indies and Sri Lanka in June 2018.

Full Record of Day/Night Tests as on July 2018:

Results

10 Tests is a good time to take stock of performances in these matches, though the sample size is too small to make averages and strike rates meaningless. India and Bangladesh have not played any such Test yet, though Zimbabwe has.

Note that 8 of the 10 matches have been won by the hosts (including one by Pakistan in UAE). Sri Lanka is the only exception, with wins over Pakistan in UAE and West Indies in West Indies over the past year.

Now for individual performances.

Batting

Most runs (200 and above):

Most runs

Several hundreds have contributed to these totals. Asad Shafiq is the only one with 2 centuries, shile SPD Smith is the only one with 4 scores above 50. And a number of the top scorers are still playing.

Highest innings scores (90 and above):

Highest innings

There is already a triple century, a double century and a near-double century.

Now for Bowling:

AR match

Here we see that Holder’s match performance was the best, though he lost the Test as captain.

Pink-ball Test records (after 5 Tests, August 2017)

A total of five day-night Tests (or pink-ball Tests) have been played until now. All 5 have had results:

Results

It can be seen that all 5 Tests have been won by the hosts (if you consider Pakistan to be the host at Dubai).

While we do not have enough of a sample set to seriously look at aggregates and averages, we can certainly look at innings and match performances. We start with

Batting: Highest innings (50 and above):

Innings above 50

There are already an impressive array of centuries including a double and a triple.

Bowling: best innings bowling (4wi and above):

Bowling-innings

Bishoo’s 8-for did not help his side to win, though Hazlewood’s 6wi did.

Bowling: best match bowling (6wm and above):

Bowling-matches

Best match bowling-all cases of 9wm and above:

P-WI match

Gabriel and Yasir Shah recorded 9-wicket hauls in this series, although the overall record of 12-100 was set by Fazal Mahmood long ago. Bishoo and Yasir Shah had  10-wicket hauls last year in the UAE.

Bowling averages (Minimum 2000 balls)-all instances:

P-WI bowl average

Croft has the best bowling average with Marshall and Wasim Akram close behind.

The best strike rates are 39.6 by Waqar Younis and 41.7 by Croft.

Fielding: 12 or more dismissals:

P-WI match fielding

The much-maligned Kamran Akmal has the record of 9 dismissals, while Imtiaz Ahmed holds the record of 3 stumpings. The most catches by non-keepers is 5 by Logie, Taufeeq Umar and Younis Khan. Younis achieved this in the 2nd Test of this series.

No wicket-keepers figure in this list as none of them played enough. The best dismissal rate is by Younis Khan followed by Viv Richards.

All-round performance (see criteria in table):

P-WI AR

Even with these modest criteria, only Imran Khan qualifies with a respectable total of 775 runs and 80 wickets.

All-round match performance (fifty and 5wi in match):

P-WI AR match

Oddly enough, Imran did not achieve this but the then captain Mushtaq Mohammad’s all-round performance is one of the finest for Pakistan. And we are reminded of Gayle’s lesser-known bowling capability.

Test bowling performances of 2016

This applies to all Tests during the calendar year 2016.

Most wickets taken (20 and above):

tests2016-wkts

Ashwin is far ahead of the runner-up Herath. Ashwin also has the most fivers (8) followed by Herath (5). Ashwin yet again has the most tenners (3) followed by Herath and Yasir Shah with 2 apiece.

Best bowling (innings): All instances of 6 or more wickets.

tests2016-bowlinngs

Bishoo has the best innings figures for the year but his side lost that Test. Interestingly, RA Jadeja has the best innings figures for India.

Best bowling (match): All instances of 8 or more wickets

tests2016-bowlmatch

Ashwin’s and Herath’s names keep recurring here.

Bowling averages: (Minimum 1500 balls):

tests2016-bowl-avg

Herath tops this list followed by the less heralded Wagner and then Starc.

Jadeja has the  best economy rate of 2.27, followed by Anderson (2.46) and Herath (2.61)

The best strike rate is by Rabada (36.6) followed by Starc (39.0) and Herath (43.4)

Though Ashwin took the most wickets, he did not score very well on these parameters.

To be continued.

Tests between Pakistan and the West Indies-1

Better late than never. Here is a summary of all Tests between these countries including the recently concluded series in the UAE. A point of interest was that the West Indies recorded their first victory over Pakistan in neutral Tests, having lost 2-0 in 2002 and now 2-1. We see that they had lost all 4 neutral Tests against Pakistan till then.

49 Tests have been played between these countries. Pakistan now lead 18-16 with 15 draws. A summary:

                    Pak      WI       Draw  Total

In Pak         9              4          8           21

In WI           5             11          7           23

Neutral       4               1         0             5

Total          18            16      15           49

We now look at batting:

Most runs (500 and more):

pak-wi-runs

M. Yousuf has the most centuries (7) followed by Inzamam and Lara with 4 apiece

M. Yousuf also has the most 50+ scores with 10, while four others have made 9.

And M. Yousuf has scored the most runs in this series though he played in  a relatively small number of Tests.

Highest innings (150 and above):

pak-wi-hs

The top score here was the world record Test score for almost 40 years and strangely enough, Gary Sobers’s maiden Test hundred. In the same series, Pakistan recorded their highest score of this series which was one of the longest in all first-class cricket. It is still Pakistan’s highest Test score and the longest innings in all Tests (though no longer the first-class record).

Azhar Ali is the only current player here.

Highest batting averages (20 or more innings, all instances):

pak-wi-avg

Wasim Raja tops this rather surprisingly. But heavy scorers such as M. Yousuf (101.16 in 14 innings), Sobers (89.45 in 13 innings) and Hanif (73.60 in 11 innings) did not play enough to feature here. See the first table above for their averages.

Mention must also be made of Kraigg Brathwaite’s batting feat (which deserves a post to itself): https://abn397.wordpress.com/2016/11/04/kraigg-brathwaites-unique-feat/

Now for bowling:

Most wickets (20 and more):

pak-wi-bowling

The top few names are as expected, while newcomers such as Bishoo and Yasir Shah are climbing rapidly.

Imran has the most fivers (6), followed by 4 each by Akram and Walsh. No one has taken more than one tenner.

Best innings bowling (6 or more wickets):

pak-wi-innings-bowl

Bishoo’s 8-49 was the second best in this series, though his team did not win that match. The only other current player here is Yasir Shah at the bottom, though at least his team did win.

Best match bowling (9 or more wickets):

pak-wi-match-bowl

Bishoo and Yasir Shah also appear here.

Best bowling average (Minimum 2000 balls, all instances):

pak-wi-bowl-avg

Current players will take a while to reach here.

It can be seen that the best economy rates are 2.05 by Gibbs and 2.36 by Fazal. The best strike rates are 39.6 by Younis and 41.7 by Croft.

To be continued.
