Records of the T20I World Cup (2007-2022): Part 2

Hope you have seen the first part:

Continuing with Bowling statistics:

Most wickets (20 or more):

Shakib leads by a large margin over Shahid Afridi (the original one). From India, the best is 32 by Ashwin.

Best innings bowling (including all 5wi and over):

BAW Mendis and Herath have much better innings analyses than others including Umar Gul and Sam Curran. Curran’s 5-10 was the best in 2022. For India, the best is 4-11 by Ashwin in 2014

Best bowling averages (Minimum 500 balls bowled, all instances):

Only 7 bowlers have bowled enough to qualify. S Ajmal is closely followed by Ashwin, who is the only Indian player here. Next is Shakib.

Summing up this table:

Best averages: Ajmal, Ashwin

Best economy rates: Ashwin, S Afridi

Best strike rates: Ajmal, Ashwin.

Next we come to Fielding statistics:

Most dismissals (12 and above):

The most dismissals are 32 by ABD and Dhoni. AB de Villiers has 9 dismissals as a keeper and 23 as a fielder, while all of Dhoni’s 32 dismissals are as a keeper.

Kamran Akmal is next with 30 dismissals as a keeper, including the most stumpings at 18.

de Villers has the most catches as a fielder (23) followed by DA Warner with 20.

Most dismissals in an innings (4):

Nobody reached this level in 2022. Dhoni is the only one from India, and the only one to appear here twice. Also note the 4 stumpings by Kamran Akmal and Ramdin. DJG Sammy is the only fielder here.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings and 0.600):

The best here is by the “hybrid” AB de Villiers with 1.066. Next are Dhoni and Kamran Akmal with 1.000.

The best by a “pure” fielder is 0.678 by MJ Guptill followed by current player GJ Maxwell (0.666)

Finally, we come to all-round performances:

Overall: Minimum 20 innings batted and 500 balls bowled:

Only 3 qualify here, with only Shakib having a creditable performance.

However, we get another viewpoint here:

Best match performance (Minimum 30 runs and 3 wickets):

The best performances here would be by DJ Bravo (66* and 4-38), followed by SR Watson’s 72 and 3-34 and Shakib’s 46 and 4-9. The best for India is by HH Pandya in 2022. Also note CR Brathwaite’s 34* which included 4 successive 6s in the 2016 final.

Analysis of the Asia T-20I Cup, 2022

Sri Lanka won the championship winning against Pakistan in the final.

The third and fourth places were taken by India and Afghanistan respectively.

Bangladesh and Hong Kong made up the final 6.

All the figures given below are for the matches starting from August 27, which include the 6 teams mentioned above but not the preliminary round in which Singapore, Kuwait and the UAE participated.

Team performances:

Batting: 100 or more runs:

M Rizwan has the most runs (281) closely followed by Kohli with 276.

Kohli was the only one to score a century in this tournament (which was his first in T20Is). He and Rizwan were the only ones to make three 50+ scores. The Sri Lankan pair of Nissanka and K Mendis made two 50+ scores each.

Highest individual scores (50 or more):

Kohli’s 122* is far ahead of the next scores of 84 and 78*

Most wickets (6 or more):

B Kumar leads with 11 wickets, followed by PWH de Silva (Hasaranga). Kumar was the only one with a 5 -for. He and two others also scored 4-fors, as we see below.

Best innings bowling (including all 3wi or better):

PM Liyanagamage is often listed as P Madushan in scorecards.

Most dismissals (3 or more):

Iftikhar and Nissanka lead with 5 dismissals as fielders. A number of keepers have made 3 dismissals.

Most innings dismissals (2 or more):

Karthik has made 3 dismissals as a keeper, while Nawaz and Nissanka took 3 catches as fielders. No stumping is recorded here.

All-round match performance (Minimum 20 runs and 2 wickets):

In three roughly equal efforts, Hasaranga’s 36 and 3-27 in the final would be the best.

In this tournament, Sri Lanka did outshine the more favoured India and Pakistan.

T20I cricket between India and Pakistan (Sep 2022)

As India and Pakistan will not be playing T20I matches in the near future, we can review the few matches they have played since 2007.

Here is the

Complete list of matches until Sep 7, 2022:

India and Pakistan first met at the start of the 2007 T20 World Championship. While that was a tie, India won in a bowl-out and went on to win the final against Pakistan.

Of the 11 matches played, India won 7, Pakistan 3 and 1 was tied.

In India, India lead 2-1

No matches have been played in Pakistan.

On neutral grounds, India won 5, Pakistan 2 and 1 was tied.

Batting-most runs (100 and above):

Kohli has by far the most runs with 406. No one else has made even 200. Kohli also has the most fifties (4). No one from either side has scored a century.

Highest individual score (50 and above):

Rizwan just outscores Kohli here. Next is Gambhir in the 2007 final.

Rizwan also has the highest score in the current Asia Cup.

Bowling-most wickets (5 and above):

Umar Gul has the most wickets (11) followed by the current player B Kumar with 10.

Innings bowling-3wi and above:

Mohammad Asif’s 4-18 in 2007 is the best, followed by B Kumar’s 4-26 in the current Asia Cup.

Fielding-most dismissals (4 and above):

Headed by Dhoni (who else?) while Raina has the most catches by a fielder.

Fielding-most innings dismissals (3 and above):

Headed by Dhoni again with 4 catches. 3 others (Raina and current players Karthik and Nawaz) with 3 are next.

All-round performance

At least 20 runs and 2 wickets in an innings:

Only 2 instances, with HH Pandya’s effort in this Asia Cup being the best.

Review of England vs India ODIs-Jul 2022 (Part 2)

Hope you have read Part 1.

Continuing with individual records

Fielding:

Most dismissals (12 or more):

Led by Dhoni (55) and current player Buttler.

The most by a fielder is 24 by Collingwood.

Most innings dismissals (4 or more):

Dhoni is the only one with 6 dismissals, followed by the forgotten S Viswanath and today’s Buttler. No fielder took 4 or more catches.

Dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.600):

The current player Buttler is followed by Dhoni at a distance. Azharuddin has the highest rate as a fielder, followed by Dravid who was the keeper in some matches.

All-round performance:

Overall (Minimum 20 innings and 1000 balls bowled):

The current player Jadeja has left Kapil and Flintoff far behind,

Match performance (Minimum 40 and 4wi):

In this short list, Yuvraj’s performance would be followed by Pandya’s in this series.

Review of England-India T20Is (July 2022)

India won the series 2-1 in July 2022.

The results are summarised below:

India maintain their lead at 12-10, although England leads 5-4 for matches in England.

We now look at individual performances.

Batting:

Most runs (100 and more):

Kohli remains the leader, considerably ahead of runner-up Buttler.

No one has more than one century.

The most fifty-plus scores are 4 by Kohli.

Highest innings (60 and more):

The highest individual score is 117 by SA Yadav in the 3rd match of this series. The earlier record was 101* by KL Rahul in 2018. The best for England is 83* by Buttler in early 2021. DJ Malan’s 77 is the highest for England in England.

Bowling:

Most wickets (6 and more):

Led by current players Jordan (18), Chahal and Pandya.

Best innings bowling (including all 4wi and more):

Chahal’s record of 6-25 from 2017 still stands, as does Dernbach’s 4-22 for England back in 2011.

Fielding:

Most dismissals (6 and more):

Buttler equalled Dhoni’s record of 12 dismissals.

Buttler has the most catches by a keeper (9) and Dhoni the most stumpings (6). Kohli has the most catches by a fielder (10).

Best innings dismissals (3 and more):

Headed by Dhoni (5), while Rahane had 4 catches as a fielder.

All-round match performance (minimum 20 runs and 2 wickets):

Pandya’s 51/4-33 in this series would be the best. MM Ali’s 36/2-26 in this series is the best for England.

All-round feats in T20Is (Jul 2022)

Here we consider all instances of 40 runs and 4 wickets in a T20I. No one has taken 50/5wi in a T20I among major teams (those which play Tests and have or had ODI status).

Taking a look at all those who did the double of 40/4wi:

There are only 9 such instances, the last being Hardik Pandya’s 51/4-33 at Southampton on 7 Jul 2022.

The first to achieve this was DJ Bravo with 66* and 4/38 against India during the 2009 T20I World Cup.

It can be seen that Pandya’s figures are comparable to those of the best players here.

No other player from India makes this cut.

India-Sri Lanka T20Is, Feb 2022

India won this series 3-0, just after winning 3-0 against the West Indies by the same margin. Thus India won two successive home T20I series with 3-0 clean sweeps.

The last series between India and SL was in July 2021, when SL won 2-1 against a depleted Indian team visiting the island. Earlier India had won 3-0 against Sri Lanka at home in Dec 2017.

Overall results in T20Is:

India continued its dominance at home, though SL has done better at home and at neutral venues.

We now look at individual performances, starting with

Batting:

Most runs (150 or more):

Dhawan leads here, while Kohli and RG Sharma are joint second.

RG Sharma is the only one with a century, and Kohli the only one with 4 50+ scores.

SS Iyer made 3 fifties in this series.

Highest innings (60 and above):

While RG Sharma has the highest score in these matches, he failed to cross 60 in this series. Ishan Kishan’s 89 was the highest in this series. Apart from SS Iyer’s consistency, there were also good innings by Nissanka and MD Shanaka this time.

There is not enough data for meaningful analysis of batting averages and strike rates.

Now for

Bowling:

Most wickets (8 and above):

No one has taken 5wi in these matches. YS Chahal is the only one with 2 4wis.

Chahal has the most wickets, closely followed by Chameera.

Best innings bowling (including all 3wi):

Ashwin and Hasaranga (PWH de Silva) have the best innings figures. The best in this series was 2-9 by B Kumar.

Again, we do not have enough data for bowling averages etc.

Next is

Fielding:

Most dismissals (5 and above):

Led by Dhoni, while HH Pandya has the most dismissals by a fielder.

Most innings dismissals (3 and above):

Dhoni leads again. No one else has taken more than 2 dismissals in an innings.

Finally,

All-round performances:

Minimum 20 runs and 2 wickets in a match:

No good performances in this series. Yuvraj’s performance in 2009 is clearly the best, while Ashwin’s would be next best.

The Test debutants of 2017

Here we review the good performances by those who made their Test debut in 2017.

Batting: 50+ in an innings:

50 innings

A century and a near century. While Blundell has played only one Test after his debut, Markram continued to score well in his subsequent matches. As of Jan 31, 2018 he has a Test average of 52.00 with 2 centuries and 2 fifties. Pandya has not been so consistent, though he has an average of 33.00 with a century and 2 fifties. The others have not done much until now, though we may soon hear more about them.

We also look at debutants who scored:

75+ in a match:

75 match

Apart from Blundell, Markram and Sohail also scored over 100 runs in their debut match.

Bowling: 3wi or more:

3wi

Roland-Jones is the only one with a five-for, with Kuldeep Yadav the only other one with a four-for. While injury caused the former to miss a number of Tests, Yadav has done particularly well in limited-over matches. Roland-Jones took 17 wickets at 19.64 so far, while Yadav has 9 wickets at 20.77.

Looking at match performances:

4wm or more:

4wm

Roland-Jones has by far the best figures here, while Olivier is second.

Fielding: 2 or more dismissals in an innings:

2di

Markram has the most catches (3) while two others have 2. Nurul Hasan is the only keeper here.

Looking at match performances:

3 or more dismissals in a match:

3dm

Markram and Nurul Hasan again. As of today Markram has 6 catches besides 520 runs in 6 Tests.

All-round performances: runs and wickets

40 runs and 4 wickets in a match:

AR 40-4

Roland-Jones again with Overton. Roland-Jones has 82 runs and 17 wickets in 4 Tests. Overton was unfortunate to make his debut against Australia in Australia.

All-round performances: runs and dismissals

20 runs and 2 dismissals in a match:

AR 20-2

Markram’s performance is the best here followed by that of Mosaddek.
