Review of England-New Zealand Tests-2

Continuing our study of Tests between these teams up to June 2022.

Fielding: Most dismissals (20 and more):

Only Root among current players, with Parore and RW Taylor having the most dismissals. The most stumpings were by TG Evans of the 1940s and 50s, most catches by AC Parore and most catches by a non-keeper by SP Fleming.

Most dismissals in an innings (5 and above):

CMW Read is the only one with 6 dismissals. No non-keeper has taken 5 or more.

Most dismissals in a match (7 and above):

This includes one with 8 dismissals by current player Blundell.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.600):

Root and Latham represent current players. The highest by a keeper is 1.826 by IDS Smith, and SP Fleming has 0.970 as the highest by a non-keeper.

All-round overall (see criteria in table):

IT Botham leads here, while Sir Richard and CL Cairns also have good figures.

All-round match performance (50 and 5wi in match):

These teams have had good all-rounders, which accounts for the number of entries here. Of special note are those who had a century and 5wi in the same match (Botham in Feb 1978 and Jan 1984). Those with a fifty and 10wm are AW Greig, Sir Richard (Aug 1986) and DJ Nash.

Current player TG Southee scored 50 and took 5wi on debut in 2008.

The forgotten DJ Nash was the first from any Test country to make a fifty and take 10+ wickets at Lord’s. Later MM Ali did it for Eng v SA in 2017.

When the tail wagged against India

Indian bowlers have often been frustrated by lower-order batsmen. This happened in the first Test of this series as well as the first innings of the second Test.

Here we list all scores in Tests of 70 and above from No 8-11 (sorry, 12) against India:

Highest tailend scores against India

This includes several debut scores (including 137* by Neesham, 105 by BR Taylor, 103* by Samaraweera to begin with) as well as career-best scores of 173 by IDS Smith, 137* by Neesham, 107 by Christiani and numerous others such as MA Starc, MD Marshall, TT Bresnan and even Anderson and Muralitharan. The most recent entry is KA Maharaj with 72.

We also look at the averages (with a minimum of 10 innings) for those who batted at 8-12 against India:

Tail against India

Vettori, Broad and Starc have scored the most runs here. Starc, JO Holder and Broad have done well in recent years.

Finally, partnerships of 90+ from the 8th wicket onward against India:

Tail partnerships against India

Ironically the highest such partnership is for the last wicket, when Anderson scored his only Test fifty. From the current series we have Maharaj and Philander with 109 for the 9th, and Muthusamy and Piedt with 91 for the 8th.

NZ-SL Test review (Aug 2019)-2

Continuing from Part 1

Bowling:

Most Wickets (15 or more):

NZ-SL wkts

Muralitharan dominates, but current players such as Southee and Boult are slowly catching up. Southee overtook Vettori as top wicket-taker for NZ during this series.

Best innings bowling (6wi or more):

NZ v SL innings bowling

Vettori has the only 7-wicket haul here. Boult and Southee did well in the 2018 series.

Best match bowling (9wm or more):

NZ-SL match bowling

While there are several 10-wicket hauls, the only recent good performance was 9-107 by Boult in 2018. Sir Richard Hadlee is here from the early days.

Bowling averages (Minimum 2000 balls, all instances):

NZ-SL bowl average

For once, Southee is ahead of Muralitharan in bowling average. We can also see that the best economy rates are by Murali followed by Southee, and that the best strike rates are by Southee followed by Boult.

Fielding:

Most dismissals (10 or more):

NZ-SL dismissals

Here Watling leads although he has played relatively fewer matches. P Jayawardene has the most stumpings.

The next two places go to Tillakratne and Mc Cullum who were not keepers in all their matches. The most by a non-keeper is 23 by Fleming. Current players including Williamson and Taylor can also be seen here.

Innings dismissals (5 or more):

NZ-SL innings fielding

While IDS Smith has 7 catches in an innings, no non-keeper has reached 5.

Match dismissals (6 or more):

NZ-SL match dismissal

Watling is the only one with 9 dismissals. The most by a non-keeper is 7 by Tillakratne, which was a share in the world record for some years. He also took 7 catches as a keeper on another occasion.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

NZ-SL dismissal rate

Tillakratne heads this table, with dismissals both as a keeper and non-keeper. Next is McCullum, another “hybrid”. The best figures by a non-keeper are by SP Fleming.

Watling is not here as he has not played enough. Williamson and Taylor have the best figures among current players.

All-round performance:

Overall (see criteria in table):

NZ-SL AR-overall

The only true all-rounders Vettori and Vaas can be seen here.

Match performance (50 and 5wi):

NZ-SL AR match

Vettori and Vaas again. Vettori has the relatively rare feat of a fifty plus 10 wickets.

More tailend heroics-1

The best scores while batting at numbers 9, 10 and 11:

At No 9: (75 and above):

75 at no 9

At No 10 (60 and above):

60 at No 10

At No 11 (50 and above):

50 at no 11

More than 25 in each innings at No 11:

25+ in each inngs by no 11

This table is for those with 2 innings and over 50 runs. It can be seen that only TJ Murtagh has scored 25+ in each innings.

Finally, those who have scored a fifty in each innings at 9 to 11:

50 in both innings at 9 to 11

It can be verified that both of them scored 50+ in both innings at No 9.
