Review of South Africa-India T20I matches-Feb 2018

The list of T20Is between South Africa and India is fairly short-only 14 matches of which one was abandoned.

SA-Ind T20I results

There have been only two bilateral T20I series between these teams. The first was in India and was won by the visitors 2-0 with one match abandoned. The second was in SA and was won by India 2-1.

The table above shows India’s first ever T20I in 2006 which was won by them. They played their next T20Is in the World Championships in Sep-Oct 2007. It may well be a record in any sport (not just cricket) where a national team won a major tournament having played only one match in that format earlier.

Since 2007 the teams have also met in one-off matches and in the World Championships.

Here is a summary of the results:

Table of results

Interestingly India have never won against SA at home, though they have done better in SA and elsewhere.

We now look at individual performances. With the limited sample size it is not worthwhile to find averages, strike rates and the like.

Batting: Over 100 runs:

Runs-100+

Rohit Sharma, who captained India in the last series, has the most runs. He and Raina are the only ones to have scored centuries in matches between these countries. Duminy has the best total for SA.

Innings of 50 and over:

Innings-50+

During the last series, first Dhawan and then Pandey recorded the highest scores for Ind in SA. CA Ingram’s score in an one-off match in 2012 remains the best for SA.

Bowling (4 wickets and over):

Wickets-4+

Newcomer CJ Dala moved up quickly during this series. The only 5-for is by B Kumar in this series.

Innings bowling (3wi and over):

Innings -3w+

During this series, B Kumar recorded the best bowling figures for matches between these teams. CJ Dala had the best bowling figures for SA against India at home.

Fielding: 4 and more dismissals:

Dismissals-4+

The most dismissals are 9 by non-keepers RG Sharma and Raina. The most by a keeper is 5 by Dhoni.

Fielding: 2 and more dismissals in an innings:

Innings-2+ dism

Strangely Dhoni does not appear here, and Karthik has the most stumpings. During that match Karthik also took a catch as a fielder.

All-round performances (20+ runs and 2+ wickets in a match):

AR-20+2w

Only one such instance, and it is not Kallis as you might think.

Review of South Africa-India Tests-Jan 2018-Pt 2

We now move on to fielding.

Most dismissals (12 and above):

Dismissals

Boucher leads, with de Villiers and others catching up. Not many stumpings here. The most catches by a non-keeper is 25 by de Villiers, and the most by a “pure” fielder is 23 by Kallis followed by Dravid and McMillan.

Most innings dismissals (4 and above):

Innings fielding

Several instances of 5 dismissals, including two in the same Test by WP Saha in this series. The most by a fielder is 4 by Hudson.

Most match dismissals (5 and above):

Match dismissals

Saha has the best figures of 10 dismissals here, followed by Richardson and Boucher. The most catches by a fielder is 5 by Amla.

Saha’s 10 dismissals are among the best in all Tests:

Most dismissals in all Tests (10 and above):

WK records

Saha’s 10 is the best for India, surpassing 9 by Dhoni in his last Test at Melbourne in Dec 2014. Note that RW Taylor was the first to make 10 dismissals, which happened to be in a Test in India famous for Botham’s century plus 13 wickets as well as a total solar eclipse. Prior to that the record was 9 dismissals by Australia’s GRA Langley in 1956.

Best dismissal rates (minimum 20 innings, 0.500):

Dismissal rate

Boucher has the best rate here, with GC Smith having the best among pure fielders. The “hybrid” de Villiers has a better rate than him.

Overall all-round performances (see criteria below):

AR-overall

Here we have an unusual result with McMillan leading and Pollock in second place. Kallis does not seem to have done well as a bowler against India.

All-round match performances (Fifty-plus and fiver):

AR-match

No Kallis here either, though the less distinguished Boje is there.

Review of South Africa-India Tests-Jan 2018-Pt 1

After the conclusion of this series won by South Africa with a 2-1 margin, the results of Tests between these countries are summarized below:

Overall

India recorded their third Test win in South Africa, and maintained their unbeaten record at Johannesburg. They won 2 and drew 3 at this venue, going back to the first series in 1992-93. India’s first Test win in SA had come here in December 2006. They are yet to win a Test series in SA and Australia, though they have drawn series in both countries.

We now look at individual performances, starting with batting:

Most runs (500 and above):

Amla and de Villiers are 3rd and 4th on the all-time list. Other current players include Kohli, Pujara, Rahane and Vijay.

Tendulkar and Kallis both have 7 centuries. The most scores of 50+ are 12 by the same pair and Amla.

Highest innings (115 and above):

Indiv innings

This was a low-scoring series, with only Kohli’s 153 featuring here. Amla, Pujara, du Plessis and others have done well in earlier series. Sehwag’s 319 is India’s highest score in all Tests.

Highest batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Batting average

Kallis and Sehwag expectedly top the averages. Kohli, Pujara, du Plessis and some other current players do not appear here as they have not played 20 innings. However, we can also look at

Highest batting strike rates (minimum 1000 balls faced, all instances):

Batting SR.JPG

Here Sehwag has by far the highest strike rate, followed by Azharuddin, GC Smith and Kohli. Dravid’s SR is surprisingly low.

Now to bowling:

Most wickets (20 and above):

To be continued.
