ODIs of 2018-1

The ODIs of the year are over, and we review team and individual performances here:

First, the ICC rankings at the end of the year:

Team ranking

It can be seen that the 10 teams participating in the 2019 World Cup are the top 10 here.

This table includes matches in the past 2-3 years. Nepal has ODI status but has not played enough matches to get a ranking.

Here we look at W/L ratios. This and all subsequent tables refer to performances in the calendar year 2018.

Guess who finished last 🙂

And guess who played the most matches.

Of course, this table does not mean much as it does not take into account the opponent’s strength, which the ICC rankings are supposed to.

We now move to individual performances, starting with

Batting:

500 or more runs:

Batting-500

Also note that Kohli (6) and RG Sharma (5) have the most centuries, while Kohli (9) also has the most fifties followed by RG Sharma, Root and Fakhar Zaman with 8.

Innings scores of 125 or more:

Batting Innings-125

Batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Batting average

You might expect Kohli, Sharma and a few others to be here but they did not play enough innings. However, they appear below:

Highest strike rates (Minimum 80.00 for a minimum of 500 balls faced):

Batting strike rate

Note that England has the two top spots, while India also has a few with strike rates above 100.

To be continued.

Review of England-India series, 2018-2

Hope you have read the first part.

Continuing with fielding:

Most dismissals (20 or more):

Eng-India 20 dis

Dhoni is ahead by a large margin, with the most dismissals and catches by a keeper. However Kirmani has the most stumpings. Cook has the most catches by a non-keeper. With 13 catches in this series, he overtook Dravid and Gavaskar.

Meanwhile, Bairstow and Buttler are rapidly moving up the table.

Most innings dismissals (5 or more):

Eng-Ind inngs dism-5

While the top two performances were long ago, Bairstow and Pant both took 5 in an innings during this series. Yajurvindra’s 5 (on debut) remains the best for a non-keeper.

Most match dismissals (7 or more):

Eng-Ind match dis-7

Pant and Rahul both took 7 catches in the course of India’s sole win of the series. Bairstow followed up with 7 in the last Test. Yajurvindra and Rahul have the best performances by non-keepers, while Bob Taylor is far ahead of everyone else.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.600):

Eng-Ind field avg

As you may expect, Taylor and Dhoni have the top two positions. Solkar has the best rate for non-keepers, far ahead of Dravid. Bairstow and Buttler are also here.

All-round performances:

Overall (see criteria in table):

Kapil and Ashwin lead, with surprise entries such as the occasional bowler Borde, besides Kumble who made his only Test century here.

Some obvious candidates such as Botham and Mankad are not here as they did not play enough in this series. However, they do appear in :

Best all-round performance in match (fifty+ and 5+wi):

Eng-Ind AR match

The best performances are by Botham (1980) and Mankad, while the long-forgotten JK Lever’s debut performance is also noteworthy. Pandya is the only appearance from this series, though we can also see B Kumar achieving this twice in 2014. Then there is the old firm of Ashwin and Jadeja.

A closer look at centuries in first innings of Tests

Note: All data correct as of April 15, 2018. The Test involving the ICC XI in 2005 is excluded.

We first look at the best averages in first innings:

1st innings averages

And those who scored the most centuries in the first innings (9 and above):

Centuries in first innings

Ponting is just ahead of the overall leader in centuries as well as the second-placed.

Now let see who disliked the first innings. These players made the most centuries without ever making one in the first innings:

AD Mathews (8)

followed by Taufeeq Umar (7), WW Armstrong (6) and MG Burgess (5).

Mathews is still playing Tests so he may improve (?) on his record.

Conversely, there are those who love batting in the first innings. Apart from Ponting and his companions at the top of the table, there are those who scored all their centuries in the first innings:

JM Bairstow (5) He reached this mark in the last Test he played which was against New Zealand in 2018.

Next are AF Rae and Wasim Raja with 4.

Special mention to SP Fleming (8 out of 9 centuries in the first innings) and KC Wessels (5/6).

The second, third and fourth innings will follow.
