Summary of all England-India Tests-Sep 2021 (Pt 1)

At the time of writing, we can say that England and India played a 4-Test series which India won 2-1. The fate of the 5th Test will be decided later. Perhaps an one-off Test at Manchester sometime in 2022.

Anyway, we look at the summary of all England-India Tests until now.

130 Tests have been played between these teams.England lead 49-31 with 50 draws.

In 66 Tests in England, England lead 35-9 with 22 draws.

In 64 Tests in India, India lead 22-14 with 28 draws.

India’s series victories in England were:

1971: 1 W, 2 D

1986: 2 W, 1 D

2007: 1 W, 2 D

2021: 2 W, 1 L, 1 D

One may argue that the 1986 team did the best.

So far, India has never won a Test at Manchester, Birmingham and Southampton.

Individual records:

Batting: Most runs (1000+):

Root is close to catching up with the top 3. Kohli and Pujara are the other current players here.

Root has the most centuries (8) while Tendulkar, Cook and Dravid have 7 apiece.

For 50+ scores, Tendulkar and Gavaskar have 20 apiece and Root has 18.

Highest innings (175+):

This series was relatively low-scoring with Root’s 180* being the highest, though he had made 218 earlier in 2021. Kohli and Pujara have earlier made double centuries.

Highest averages (Minimum 20 innings, 35.00):

Barrington is followed by Dravid and Root. Kohli, Pujara and Rahul are further down. Gavaskar’s average is surprisingly low.

Best Strike rates (Minimum 1000 balls, 45.00)

Kapil and Sehwag have the highest strike rates, as one would expect. Buttler and Ashwin (!) have the highest among current players. Next are Root, Jadeja and Rahul

England leads overall 48-29, although in England the lead is 34-7 but in India they trail by 22-14

Looking at individual performances in batting:

Most runs (1000 and over):

We also see that the most centuries are 7 each by Tendulkar, Cook and Dravid. For 50+ scores, the most are 20 each by Tendulkar and Gavaskar followed by 16 each by Cook and Viswanath.

Root and Kohli have the most runs by current players.

Highest individual scores (175 and above):

During this series, JE Root made 218 at Chennai. This is now the highest for England in India, surpassing Gatting’s 207 at the same venue in 1984-85.

Highest batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, 40.00):

Barrington surprisingly has the highest average, followed by Dravid and Pietersen. Among current players, the highest average of 54+ is by Root and 45+ by Kohli.

To conclude batting, we look at highest strike rates (Minimum 1000 balls faced, 50.00)

Kapil has the highest here, predictably followed by Sehwag and Botham. Among current players we have Buttler (62), Ashwin (57) and Bairstow (53).
