India-West Indies ODIs, Feb 2022(Pt 2)

Hope you have read the first part:

Continuing with individual performances, in

Bowling:

Most wickets (20 or more):

Walsh leads with 44 wickets, closely followed by Kapil with 43. Among current players there are Jadeja and Shami with 41 apiece.

Shami has 2 instances of 4+wi, and Dillon is the only one with 2 fivers

Best innings bowling (including all 5wi or more):

Kumble has by far the best performance here, followed by Patterson and non-regular bowler Viv Richards who did particularly well against India. From current players there are JO Holder, Jadeja, newcomer MP Krishna and Shami.

Best bowling averages (1000 balls, all instances):

It looks like Viv Richards’s best bowling efforts were against India. Next are Ambrose and Kumble. Among current players there are Jadeja, Roach and JO Holder.

The best averages are by Richards and Ambrose.

The best economy rates are by Marshall and Ambrose.

The best strike rates are by Richards and Kumble.

Now for

Fielding:

Most dismissals (15 and above):

Dhoni has the most dismissals with 47 and most stumpings with 14.

Dujon (34) and Dhoni (33) have the most catches by keepers.

Richards (26) and Hooper (25) have the most catches by fielders.

From current players there are SD Hope, Kohli, Dhawan and RG Sharma.

Best innings fielding (4 or more dismissals):

Ramdin is the only one with 5 dismissals. And Dravid is the only fielder with 4 catches.

Among current players there are keepers SD Hope and Pant.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings, 0.500):

Led by Ramdin with 1.333. The best by a fielder is 0.838 by Richards. Among current players there are Dhawan, Kohli and Pollard.

Finally we come to

All-round performance:

Overall (see criteria in table):

Richards has the best performance, with the others far behind. While Hooper and Kapil qualify as all-rounders here, current player JO Holder does not.

Match performance (30 runs and 3 wickets):

While several players have achieved this in the past, the last instance was in 2009. The two best performances appear to be by Viv Richards again: (110*/3-42 in Jan 1988, 44/6-41 in Oct 1989). Next would probably be 61*/3-32 by DJ Bravo in May 2006.

Weird conclusion: Viv Richards was the best all-rounder and among the best bowlers in these matches.

Review of Tests between India and South Africa-1

The series in 2021-22 resulted in a 2-1 win for South Africa, after India won the first Test. India has failed to win a Test series in SA, although they have won at least one series in all other countries. The best India has done there is an 1-1 draw in 2010-11. The 2021-22 series followed the pattern of 2006-07 where India won the first Test but lost the next two.

Here is an overall summary of Tests between these two countries:

SA leads India 17-15 overall. Both sides appear to have strong home advantages.

We now look at individual performances, starting with

Batting:

Most runs (500 or more):

Led by Tendulkar and Kallis.

These two have the most centuries (7)

Amla, Kallis and Tendulkar have the most 50+ scores (12).

From the above table, the best by current players is 1236 by Kohli, followed by Rahane, Pujara and Elgar with 800+. RG Sharma is further down.

Highest innings (125 or more):

The highest by current players are 254* by Kohli, followed by double centuries by MA Agarwal and RG Sharma. But no one crossed 125 in this series.

Highest batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Kallis has the highest average, followed by Kohli at some distance. Other current players here are Rahane, Elgar and Pujara.

Highest strike rates (Minimum 1000 balls faced, all instances):

Sehwag and Azharuddin lead here. Among current players there are RG Sharma (in 3rd place), Kohli and Rahane. Also note Dravid at the bottom of this list.

Bowling performances:

Most wickets (12 or more):

Led Kumble, followed by Steyn and Srinath at a distance. Ashwin (56) has the most by a current player, followed by Shami, Rabada and Jadeja. Also note M Jansen with 19 in his debut series.

The most 5-fors are 5 by Steyn and Ashwin. No one has taken more than one 10-for.

Best innings bowling (includes all 6wi and more):

The best performance was an 8-for by Klusener on his debut.

Current players here include SN Thakur, Ashwin and Ngidi.

Thakur’s 7-61 in this series is the best for India against SA, surpassing the earlier record of 7-66 by Ashwin (Nagpur, 2015) and 7-120 by Harbhajan (Cape Town, 2011) which was India’s best in SA.

Best match performances (includes all 8wm and more):

Led by Ashwin and Donald with 12-fors, and 10-fors by Steyn, Pollock and V Prasad.

Current players here include Ashwin, Jadeja and Ngidi.

Best bowling averages (Minimum 2000 balls bowled, all instances):

Headed by Donald and Jadeja (!) Current players here include Jadeja, Shami, Ashwin and Rabada.

The best economy rates are by Pollock and Jadeja.

The best strike rates are by Steyn and Shami.

To be continued.

Best debut bowling against India

The second Test at Centurion was noted for various things such as silly runouts and young Ngidi’s bowling. Here we look at the best bowling figures on debut against and for India (all figures as of 17 Jan 2018).

Best against India-innings (5wi):

Debut bowling against India-I

Ngidi is in 5th position here, while his compatriot Klusener leads. That was to remain Klusener’s best in Tests, as in the case of Lever. Krezja’s effort came in a defeat for his team, and he played only one Test after this. Hazlewood is another current player in this list, while B Lee, like Bedser, had a long career.

Bedser and Pollard made their debut together. BR Taylor remains the only one in all Tests to make a century and take a fiver on debut. We will come to Lever’s similar record in a moment.

Best against India-match (7wm):

Debut bowling against India-M

The luckless Krezja tops this table. Bedser is second, and he followed with another 11-wicket haul in his second Test to start a long career for England. His partner Pollard is also here, though he had a relatively short career. Ngidi is relatively lower in this table as he took only one wicket in the first innings.

Hazlewood is the only other current player to appear here. Other famous names include B Lee and Trueman.

In an odd case of symmetry, JK Lever was the only one in all Tests to score a fifty and take a ten-for on debut. India’s S Venkataraghavan was in the Indian team on both occasions.

We also look at the corresponding figures for Indian bowlers on debut.

Best for India-innings (5wi):

Debut bowling for India-I

Hirwani steals the show here. He had a slightly better career than RAL Massie, who also took 16 wickets on debut. Ashwin and Shami are in the current team, as is Mishra from recent times. Nissar’s effort came in India’s first-ever Test.

Best for India-match (7wm):

Debut bowling for India-M

Hirwani again leads, with the best match figures in all Tests by a debutant. His 16-136 was just ahead of Massie’s 16-137. Shami, Ashwin and Mishra appear here as well. Doshi and Yadav had moderately successful careers.
