Review of India-New Zealand T20Is-January 2023

India continued its run of successes in white-ball cricket at home, winning the series 2-1 after losing the first match.

A total of 25 T20Is have been played between these teams.

India leads 12-10 with 3 ties.

In India, India leads 7-4

In NZ, India leads 5-4 with 3 ties

On neutral grounds, India trail 0-2. Both these losses came in World Cup matches.

Looking at individual performances, starting with Batting:

Most runs (250 or more):

Headed by RG Sharma with C Munro some distance behind Munro. S Gill and SA Yadav are the only other ones with centuries. RG Sharma has the most fifties (six).

Highest innings (75 or more):

S Gill now has the highest score in this series, overtaking Yadav’s 111* a short time ago. Munro’s 109* is the best for NZ.

Most dismissals (8 or more):

Southee has the most dismissals (13). The most by a keeper is 9 by Dhoni.

Most innings dismissals: Several players have made 3 dismissals in an innings.

All-round match performance (20 runs and 2 wickets):

HH Pandya appears to have the best match performance, which came in India’s win in the final T20I.

Records by India and Shubman Gill

India won the T20I series against New Zealand 2-1, winning the decider in Ahmedabad by 168 runs. This is not a record for all T20Is, but it is a record for T20Is between full members.

The previous record for matches between full members was 143 runs, which has occurred twice: India vs Ireland in June 2018 and Pakistan vs West Indies in April 2018.

Looking at individual scores:

We see that Shubman Gill’s 126* is the highest T20I score for India. It surpasses V Kohli’s 122* vs Afghanistan in Sep 2022.

Records of the T20I World Cup (2007-2022): Part 2

Hope you have seen the first part:

Continuing with Bowling statistics:

Most wickets (20 or more):

Shakib leads by a large margin over Shahid Afridi (the original one). From India, the best is 32 by Ashwin.

Best innings bowling (including all 5wi and over):

BAW Mendis and Herath have much better innings analyses than others including Umar Gul and Sam Curran. Curran’s 5-10 was the best in 2022. For India, the best is 4-11 by Ashwin in 2014

Best bowling averages (Minimum 500 balls bowled, all instances):

Only 7 bowlers have bowled enough to qualify. S Ajmal is closely followed by Ashwin, who is the only Indian player here. Next is Shakib.

Summing up this table:

Best averages: Ajmal, Ashwin

Best economy rates: Ashwin, S Afridi

Best strike rates: Ajmal, Ashwin.

Next we come to Fielding statistics:

Most dismissals (12 and above):

The most dismissals are 32 by ABD and Dhoni. AB de Villiers has 9 dismissals as a keeper and 23 as a fielder, while all of Dhoni’s 32 dismissals are as a keeper.

Kamran Akmal is next with 30 dismissals as a keeper, including the most stumpings at 18.

de Villers has the most catches as a fielder (23) followed by DA Warner with 21.

Most dismissals in an innings (4):

Nobody reached this level in 2022. Dhoni is the only one from India, and the only one to appear here twice. Also note the 4 stumpings by Kamran Akmal and Ramdin. DJG Sammy is the only fielder here.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings and 0.600):

The best here is by the “hybrid” AB de Villiers with 1.066. Next are Dhoni and Kamran Akmal with 1.000.

The best by a “pure” fielder is 0.678 by MJ Guptill followed by current player GJ Maxwell (0.666)

Finally, we come to all-round performances:

Overall: Minimum 20 innings batted and 500 balls bowled:

Only 3 qualify here, with only Shakib having a creditable performance.

However, we get another viewpoint here:

Best match performance (Minimum 30 runs and 3 wickets):

The best performances here would be by DJ Bravo (66* and 4-38), followed by SR Watson’s 72 and 3-34 and Shakib’s 46 and 4-9. The best for India is by HH Pandya in 2022. Also note CR Brathwaite’s 34* which included 4 successive 6s in the 2016 final.

Predicting results in T20I tournaments

You may have seen my predictions on Facebook for individual matches over the recently concluded T20I World Cup.

Starting with the Super 12, there were 30 league matches and 3 others (semi-finals and final). 4 league matches had no result, so there were 29 matches which had results.

I used a simple predictive tool, which was the latest ICC ranking available before the day of the match.

This gave 22 correct predictions out of 29, or 75.9 % accuracy. This included correct predictions for the NZ v Pak semi-final and the final.

Better than flipping a coin, anyway. And this does not involve making complicated estimates of the relative strengths of players and teams. As in predictions of economic statistics, the idea is to get a reasonably correct estimate based on the least number of inputs. That way we can say that this prediction method is successful, provided that one keeps track of the ICC rankings which are updated every one or two days in a tournament like this.

An attempt was made to predict whether a result would be close or one-sided depending on the difference in rankings and ranking points. This usually gave wrong predictions, but may be more useful in 50-over matches.

See how this system works at the next World Cup in 2023.

Records of the T20I World Cup (2007-2022): Part 1

Team performance, (ranked by W/L ratio):

This includes all teams who have participated in one or more tournaments until 2022, and also includes the preliminary rounds which are held just before the main tournament.

Here we see that Nepal has the highest W/L ratio, though they played in only 3 matches in the preliminary rounds in 2014. Of the “regular” teams, India leads with 1.80 followed by Australia (1.67), Sri Lanka (1.63) and South Africa (1.60). The current champion (England, 1.26) and runner-up (Pakistan, 1.56) are further down.

Next we come to

Batting:

Most runs (500 and above):

V Kohli has leapfrogged over MJ and Gayle to head this list by a large margin. Next among current players are RG Sharma and DA Warner.

The only player with 2 centuries is Gayle. Several others have one.

The most 50+ scores is 14 by V Kohli (no centuries). Next are 9 by CH Gayle (including 2 centuries) and RG Sharma (no centuries).

Most 4s ; 111 by M Jayawardene, 103 by V Kohli

Most 6s: 63 by CH Gayle, 35 by RG Sharma

Next we look at Highest Innings Scores (85 and above):

There are 11 centuries, including two from 2022. SK Raina’s 101* from 2010 remains the highest for India. AD Hales (116*) has the highest score among current players. There is a single 99 (unbeaten) by LJ Wright.

Now we look at Batting Averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Headed by V Kohli with 81.50, almost twice that of second-placed JC Buttler with 42.05. Kohli was aided by a large proportion of unbeaten innings.

Finally for today, the Highest Batting Strike Rates (Minimum 250 balls faced and minimum 125.00):

Headed by Shahid Afridi (154) and KP Pietersen (148). The most by a current player is 147 by GJ Maxwell. The best for India is, unsurprisingly, V Kohli with 131.

To be continued. https://abn397.wordpress.com/2022/11/15/records-of-the-t20i-world-cup-2007-2022-part-2/

Irfan Pathan and Sam Curran

The pair have several similarities:

They both bat left-handed and are competent tailend batsmen.

They are more known for their left-arm medium-pace bowling

Both have elder brothers (or half-brothers) who are less successful as international players.

AND they are the only bowlers to be MOM in the final of a T20I WC tournament.

Onwards to the WC finals

India can reflect on this list of teams who have scored 170 or more for the first wicket in T20Is:

And on Pakistan’s unflattering performances in T20Is against England:

Now see the T20I ratings as on Nov 11 (after the semifinals):

This tells us that England is just ahead of Pakistan.

So far, in a particular match in this tournament the team with a higher rating won 21 out of 28 times (75%). But such estimates for closely matched sides are unreliable.

Also refresh your memory of the 1992 World Cup finals. At that time Nawaz Sharif (born 1949) was PM, now it is his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif (born 1951).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Cricket_World_Cup#Knockout_stage

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharif_family

Another interesting sidelight is that England lost in the finals of 3 of the first 5 50-over World Cups. Graham Gooch played in all these matches.

Records of “Ashes” T20I matches

The Australia-England match is due to take place on Oct 28. The prospects for play seem to be poor, considering that the match at this venue earlier in the day was washed out. Anyway, here are the records of T20I matches between Australia and England.

Overall team performance:

Total matches 23. 10 won by Aus, 11 by Eng, 0 ties, 2 no-result

In Aus: Aus 7, Eng 3, NR 1 (Total 11)

In Eng: Aus 2, Eng 6, NR 1 (9)

Neutral: Aus 1, Eng 2 (3)

Note the strong home advantage for both teams.

Looking at individual performances:

Batting:

Most runs-200 and above:

Finch leads, followed by Buttler. Finch and Maxwell have scored centuries.

The most 50+ scores are 5 by Buttler, followed by Finch with 4 including a century.

The most sixes are 55 by Finch and 51 by Buttler

The most 4s are 35 by Finch and 23 by Buttler.

Highest innings scores-60 and above:

Again, Finch is far ahead of the others.

Bowling:

Most wickets-8 and above:

Rashid has the most wickets (12) followed by MG Johnson and Jordan with 11.

No one has taken a 5wi. 4 players have taken a 4wi, as we can see below.

Best innings bowling (including all 4wi):

Watson has the best figures of 4-15 here, followed by J Lewis with 4-24.

Fielding:

Most dismissals-5 and above:

Buttler and Warner have each made 11 dismissals.

Buttler (11) and Wade (7) have the most dismissals as a keeper.

Warner (11) and Hales (9) have the most dismissals as a fielder.

No one has made more than 1 stumping.

All-round match performances:

20 runs and 2 wickets in a match, in chronological order:

While there is some subjectivity here, the best performances here seem to be by Maxwell (103* and 3-10) and Watson (59 and 4-15). The only English player here is Collingwood (46 and 2-8).

Note that the ground at Southampton figures in many places in the above tables. The city is also the birthplace of the UK’s new Prime Minister.

Review of India-South Africa ODIs-Oct 2022: Part 2

Continuing with the statistical summary of ODIs between India and South Africa.

Hope you have read Part 1: https://abn397.wordpress.com/2022/10/15/review-of-india-south-africa-odis-oct-2022-part-1/

Continuing with individual performances in

Bowling:

Most wickets (15 and above):

The most by current players is 24 by Kuldeep Yadav and 22 by YS Chahal.

No one has more than one 5wi.

3 players have 3 instances of 4wi.

Best innings bowling (including all instances of 4wi):

SB Joshi’s 5-6 was the best in his short ODI career.

Kuldeep Yadav’s 4-18 at Delhi in this series is the best for India against SA at home. The previous best was 4-25 by Kumble at Wankhede in 1996.

Best bowling averages (Minimum 1000 balls bowled, all instances):

Donald and Pollock have the best averages. But no current player has bowled enough.

Kumble and Pollock have the best economy rates

Donald and Pollock have the best strike rates.

Now for

Fielding:

Most dismissals (10 and above):

Boucher (42) is closely followed by Dhoni (41). Dhoni has the most stumpings (11).

The most catches by a fielder is 23 by Kohli. Also note the “hybrid” de Villiers with 9 dismissals as keeper and 8 as fielder, totalling 17.

de Kock (25) has the most for current players.

Most innings dismissals (4 and above):

Boucher is the only one with 5 dismissals. GC Smith and Bavuma have taken 4 catches as fielders.

Best dismissal rate (Minimum 20 innings and 0.500):

Headed by Boucher. Kohli has the best rate by a fielder.

Finally, all-round performance:

Career performance (see criteria in table):

Cronje’s occasional bowling puts him at the top here, far ahead of Tendulkar. Strangely, Kallis does not qualify here.

Match performance (Minimum 30 runs and 3 wickets):

There are several instances here, but the best would clearly be by Kallis (Nov 2006) followed by Kallis again (Feb 2010). Honourable mention to Klusener.

Review of India-South Africa T20Is-Oct 2022

The two sides had met before in June 2022, when the 5-match series was drawn 2-2. This time India won 2-1. It was the first time India had won a bilateral series against SA at home. They had won series in SA earlier.

Here is a summary of all T20Is between the sides:

India still trails SA 6-5 at home, but leads 5-2 in SA and 3-1 at neutral venues. And India also won the first T20I World Championship in SA in 2007.

Overall, India leads 13-9.

We now look at individual performances, starting with

Batting:

Most runs (200 and above):

Headed by current player RG Sharma with 405 runs. Miller has the highest for SA with 320.

RG Sharma, Raina and Miller are the only ones to score centuries. de Kock has the most 50+ scores with 4.

Highest innings (60 and above):

In this series Miller made 106* in the 2nd match, the highest score in matches between these sides. Rossouw made 100* in the 3rd match. Previously SA’s record against India was 81 by H Klaasen earlier in 2022. The best innings by India in this series was was 61 by SA Yadav.

There is not enough data for meaningful calculation of batting averages and strike rates.

Now for

Bowling:

Most wickets (6 and above):

Led by current player B Kumar with 14 wickets. From SA, three players have 8 wickets each.

B Kumar is the only one with a 5-for. He is also the only one with 2 4-fors.

Best innings bowling (includes all 3wi and above):

B Kumar has the best figures of 5-24 back in 2018. The best in this series were D Pretorius’s 3-26 and Arshdeep’s 3-32.

Meaningful calculation for bowling averages, economy rates and strike rates cannot be done here either.

Now for

Fielding:

Most dismissals (5 and above):

Fielders RG Sharma (10 catches) and SK Raina (9 catches) lead here. The best by a keeper is 7 by de Kock.

Most innings dismissals (3 and above):

Several players have made 3 dismissals. Karthik has made 2 stumpings as a keeper. Miller was the only fielder to take 3 catches in this series. Oddly, no one has made a catch as a keeper.

All-round match performance (Minimum 20 runs and 2 wickets):

Two similar performances by Yuvraj and Pretorius, but nothing worthwhile in this series.
