West Indies-India Tests-2023-Pt 2

Hope you have read Pt 1.

Fielding records:

Most dismissals (18 and above):

Headed by Dujon, with Dhoni a distant second. Dhoni (8) and Kirmani (7) have the most stumpings. Richards has the most catches by a fielder (39)

Most innings dismissals (5 and above):

Saha is the only one with 6 dismissals. Sammy is the only one with 5 catches as a fielder.

More surprising is KS More’s 5 stumpings which is a world record, assisting in Hirwani’s 16-wicket haul.

Most match dismissals (6 and above):

Headed by Dhoni (8) followed by More and Saha with 7 each. More’s 6 stumpings in the match is a world record. It often gets overshadowed by Hirwani’s 16-wicket haul, which is a record for India and for all debutants.

Dismissal rate (0.500 or more):

Dhoni leads, followed by Dujon. Azharuddin has the best rate for a fielder.

All-round performance:

Overall (see criteria in table):

Sobers (followed by Kapil at a long distance) are the only ones with good figures.

Match (50 and 5wi):

Those with the 100/5wi double are OG Smith, PR Umrigar, GS Sobers, R Ashwin (twice) and RL Chase. There is no instance of the rarer 50/10wm double.

Another anniversary-India’s first Test win

Britain is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II ascending the throne (on February 6, 1952).

And the first Test won by India also started on the same day. As you can see from the scorecard, the scheduled second day (Feb 7) was made the rest day following the death of King George VI.

Note the contributions of Umrigar (130*) and Mankad (12-108). India’s first Test victory was by an innings. If you look at the English scorecard, it can be inferred that many of the team were in the Test side only because their leading players of that time did not want to tour India.

Two fifties in a match in India-WI Tests

GH Vihari became the latest to make two scores of 50+ in a Test for India against the Wes Indies. Here is the full list of those who have achieved this:

Two fifties I v WI

This includes 3 matches of Gavaskar in the 1971 series, where he made his debut on 06/03/1971. He is the only debutant here.

In 1962, Umrigar added a fiver to his two fifty-plus scores.

Two cases of centuries in both innings by Gavaskar (1971 and 1978).

The corresponding performances for the West Indies against India:

Two fifties WI v I

Only 23 such performances, compared to 33 by India.

They include Weekes’s pair of centuries in 1948, as part of his five in  successive innings.

And Sobers added a fiver to his century and fifty in 1962.

Lloyd and Greenidge were making their debuts.

Only Weekes made centuries in both innings.

An unusual all-round feat

Test matches between the West Indies and Zimbabwe have generally been one-sided. So it is a welcome change to see a strong performance by a Zimbabwe player.

Sikandar Raza became only the 15th player in all Tests to score two fifty-plus scores and take a fiver in the same Test:

AR Raza

In fact, he and Kallis are the only ones to make two scores of 80+ and take a fiver.

This list include some well-known and not so well-known players. Mankad (256) and Umrigar (228) have scored the most runs here-but in both cases India lost. Faulkner is the only other one here to have scored over 200 runs (when his team won).

There are a few other instances where the player’s team lost. Bhuvaneswar Kumar was the last to achieve this all-round feat, which resulted in a draw.

Sikandar Raza is probably the only Zimbabwe player who was born in Pakistan.
