Panthers, leopards and relatives

While attention is now focused on cheetahs, let us now look at leopards and panthers.

Most people in India use the term panther and leopard interchangeably, though they are quite different. Even some who claim to be wild life lovers are not clear about the difference.

In normal use, the Hindi word “Tendua” is used for both. But the actual terminology is different.

Leopard: तेंदुआ

Panther: काला तेंदुआ

Big Cats are defined as:

A more comprehensive list:

Cheetahs and cougars are a step below tigers, lions, leopards, jaguars and snow leopards. The latter five are more correctly called “Great Cats” while the first two are merely “Big Cats”, along with the latter five.

Finally, here is a puma joke from Arizona:

A young man in sunny Yuma

Told an elephant joke to a puma.

Now his skeleton lies

Under desert skies.

The puma had no sense of huma.
