Snippets from the 2023 World Cup

This tournament has seen many new records, particularly in batting.

This information is up to Nov 7, 2023 (after the Afg vs Aus match).

We first look at the individual’s innings scores for all WC matches:

Highest Innings scores of 150 or more in World Cup ODIs:

GJ Maxwell’s 201* is the third highest individual score in all World Cup matches. It is the highest score for Australia in World Cup matches., surpassing DA Warner’s 178 against Afghanistan in 2015.

If you look at the highest innings scores by Australian players, it reads:

201* GJ Maxwell vs Afg in 2023

178, DA Warner vs Afg in 2015

166, DA Warner vs Ban in 2019

163, DA Warner vs Pak in 2023

158, ML Hayden vs WI in 2007

Until now, DA Warner had the three highest scores for Australia.

For Indian players:

Another point of interest is the highest partnerships, when Maxwell and Cummins put on 202* for the 8th wicket against Afg. This table is again only about partnerships in the World Cup

Note that the 8th-wicket partnership of 202* was not the highest for Australia in the World cup. It is however the highest for the 8th wicket in the World Cup.

From the above table we can get the top partnerships for each wicket in the World Cup:

1st: TM Dilshan and WU Tharanga, 282 vs Zimbabwe, 2011

2nd: CH Gayle and MN Samuels, 372 vs Zimbabwe, 2015

3rd: R Dravid and SR Tendulkar, 237* vs Kenya, 1999

4th, MJ Clarke and BJ Hodge, 204 vs Netherlands, 2007

5th, JP Duminy and DA Warner, 256* vs Zimbabwe, 2015

(Some record lower-order partnerships are less than 200 and are not in the above list)

Anyway, the 202* by Maxwell and Cummins is a new 8th-wicket record for the World Cup. The earlier record for this was a mere 117 by Butchart and Houghton (of Zimbabwe) in 1987. Other partnerships for this wicket are less than 100.

There are, of course, many batting records being set in this World Cup. This is a small sample.

Review of SA-WI Tests (2023)-Part 1

South Africa won the series 2-0, continuing their dominance over the West Indies.

These teams have played 32 Tests. SA leads 22-3 with 7 draws.

In SA, the hosts lead 14-1 with 2 draws.

IN WI, SA lead 8-2 with 5 draws.

However, WI had won the one-off Test which marked SA’s return to Tests in early 1992.

We look at individual records, starting with Batting:

Most runs (750 or more):

Kallis leads by a large margin, while the next two (Lara and S Chanderpaul) have almost the same total. No current player has crossed 750.

Highest innings (150 or more):

Gayle’s 317 is over a hundred more than the second-placed 213.

The only current player here is T Bavuma with 172.

The most centuries were 8 by Kallis, followed by 7 for GC Smith

The most 50+ scores were 20 by Kallis, followed by 13 for S Chanderpaul and Lara.

Highest batting average, minimum 20 innings and 35.00:

de Villiers leads by a large margin. No current player qualifies.

Highest strike rate (Minimum 1000 balls and 45.00):

Gayle is closely followed by GC Smith. No current player here.

Records of the T20I World Cup (2007-2022): Part 1

Team performance, (ranked by W/L ratio):

This includes all teams who have participated in one or more tournaments until 2022, and also includes the preliminary rounds which are held just before the main tournament.

Here we see that Nepal has the highest W/L ratio, though they played in only 3 matches in the preliminary rounds in 2014. Of the “regular” teams, India leads with 1.80 followed by Australia (1.67), Sri Lanka (1.63) and South Africa (1.60). The current champion (England, 1.26) and runner-up (Pakistan, 1.56) are further down.

Next we come to

Batting:

Most runs (500 and above):

V Kohli has leapfrogged over MJ and Gayle to head this list by a large margin. Next among current players are RG Sharma and DA Warner.

The only player with 2 centuries is Gayle. Several others have one.

The most 50+ scores is 14 by V Kohli (no centuries). Next are 9 by CH Gayle (including 2 centuries) and RG Sharma (no centuries).

Most 4s ; 111 by M Jayawardene, 103 by V Kohli

Most 6s: 63 by CH Gayle, 35 by RG Sharma

Next we look at Highest Innings Scores (85 and above):

There are 11 centuries, including two from 2022. SK Raina’s 101* from 2010 remains the highest for India. AD Hales (116*) has the highest score among current players. There is a single 99 (unbeaten) by LJ Wright.

Now we look at Batting Averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Headed by V Kohli with 81.50, almost twice that of second-placed JC Buttler with 42.05. Kohli was aided by a large proportion of unbeaten innings.

Finally for today, the Highest Batting Strike Rates (Minimum 250 balls faced and minimum 125.00):

Headed by Shahid Afridi (154) and KP Pietersen (148). The most by a current player is 147 by GJ Maxwell. The best for India is, unsurprisingly, V Kohli with 131.

Review of SL-WI Tests-1

The Test series between Sri-Lanka and the West Indies was won by the hosts 2-0. This meant that the West Indies was yet to win a Test (let alone a series) in Sri Lanka. This is summarized here:

This also means that Sri Lanka leads 11-4 in all Tests between these teams.

We look at individual figures in Batting:

Most runs (Minimum 400):

The most centuries are 5 by Lara and 3 by Sangakkara

The most 50+ scores are 8 each by Sangakkara and Sarwan.

Among current players, the most are by Karunaratne (568) closely followed by Brathwaite (563).

Highest innings (Minimum 125):

The highest scores in the current series were 155* by DM de Silva and 147 by FD Karunaratne.

Batting averages are not here since no one has 20 or more innings.

But we do have Batting strike rates (Minimum 1000 balls faced):

Headed by Lara and M Jayawardene. FD Karunaratne has the highest SR among current players.

Most 6s in an ODI innings

In the World Cup match against Afghanistan on June 18, EJG Morgan made 148 off 71 balls with 17 6s and (only) 4 4s.

(So Gayle held the previous World Cup record).

No one else has scored 10 or more 6s in an innings so far in the 2019 World Cup. The best is 5 by JJ Roy for Eng v BD and AJ Finch for Aus v SL.

While on this topic, let us see the records for the most 4s in all ODIs (20 or more):

The runaway winner is RG Sharma with his 33 4s and 9 6s in the ODI record score of 264 for I v SL at Kolkata on 13/11/2014.

The next two positions are also held by India’s SR Tendulkar and V Sehwag (25 each), followed by ST Jayasuriya and several others with 24, i.e. far behind RG Sharma’s outlier.

The World Cup record is held by MJ Guptill with his 24 4s and 11 6s for NZ v WI at Wellington on 21/03/2015.

During this World Cup, no one else has crossed 20 4s. The best is 16 by these:

 

Review of New Zealand-West Indies Tests-1

After New Zealand’s 2-0 victory, results of Tests between these teams are summarized below:

New Zealand has now moved into the lead with 15 victories against 13 by the West Indies.

The last victory of WI against NZ was at Port of Spain in Jan 2014. The last victory of WI in NZ was a generation ago, at Wellington in Feb 1995. That is remembered for Walsh’s 13-55.

We now look at individual performances, starting with batting:

Runs scored (750 and above):

The most centuries are 4 by Taylor, and the most scores of 50+ are 10 by Chanderpaul and Gayle. Taylor is the only current player here.

Highest innings (150 and above):

None from the recent series, although Ross Taylor had a 200+ score earlier.

Highest batting averages (Minimum 20 innings, all instances):

Only Taylor from the current players. Relatively few names here because of the relative infrequency of Tests between these teams over the years.

Now for bowling:

Most wickets (30 and above):

Several current players led by Boult and Southee.

Best innings bowling (including all instances of 7wi and above):

Note Walsh’s extraordinary figures. But there are no instances from recent years.

History of the Champions Trophy since 1998

A look at the past editions of the ICC Champions trophy, giving a quick summary of the results:

Apart from the World Cup, this is the only tournament in which all Test countries have had the opportunity to take part-though in 2017 only the top 8 are playing, with the West Indies and Zimbabwe failing to qualify. Similarly in 2009 and 2013 Bangladesh and Zimbabwe did not qualify for the top 8. In 2006 all 10 countries competed, while the “main” tournament followed immediately after the “qualifying” tournament involving the bottom 4: West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. As things turned out West Indies and Sri Lanka qualified and the former ultimately became the runners-up.

There has been only one other multinational 50/60-over tournament (other than the Champions Trophy and World Cup) where all Test countries participated. This was the Benson & Hedges World Championship in Australia in 1984-85:

All 7 Test-playing countries at that time took part. These included Sri Lanka but not the exiled South Africa. You might say this was an unofficial World Cup.

Note that the only ICC tournaments won by South Africa (1998) and New Zealand (2000) can be found in the records of the Champion’s Trophy).

For the moment, the most matches played are 22 by M. Jayawardene and Sangakkara. The most runs scored is 791 by Gayle, and the most wickets 28 by the lesser-known KD Mills of New Zealand. The most dismissals are 33 by Sangakkara.

The best individual scores are 145* by NJ Astle and 145 by Andy Flower.

The best innings bowling is 6-14 by MF Mahroof of Sri Lanka. No one else has taken more than 5 wickets in an innings.

 

 

90s in T20I cricket

Having looked at 90s (mainly 99s) in Tests and ODIs, we turn to T20Is. Since there are very few 99s here, we look at 90s.

To begin with, here are the full list of 90s in T20I matches since their start in 2005:

There are only two 99s here: by AD Hales in 2012, and an unbeaten 99 by LJ Wright also in 2012. That was in the T20 World Championship.

CH Gayle is the only one to make two 90s in this format, in 2010 and 2015. On the first occasion he was captain, during the T20 world championship (not World Cup as it is often wrongly called).

90s on T20I debut:

Remember, that was the very first T20I match.

Now we look at

90s by captains in T20I:

Ponting’s 98* again, with Gayle and SPD Smith.

We take a closer look at unbeaten 90s:

The highest is 99* by LJ Wright, followed by 98* by RT Ponting, M Jayawardene and Ahmed Shehzad and 97* by HM Amla

Finally we look at unbeaten 90s in the second innings:

While Gibbs and Guptill made these scores in successful run chases, Root’s score was for a losing side.

The highest score by a captain in a successful run chase is 75* by CO Obuya for Kenya vs Netherlands in 2013. Among the Test nations, it is 73* by KS Williamson for New Zealand  vs Bangladesh earlier in 2017.

 

 

 

The records of the T20I match on 27 Jul 2016

Some records were almost broken (like Richard Levi’s 45-ball century). As you can see below, the challengers E Lewis and KL Rahul just fell short.

But here are some records which did get broken.

India’s 244/4 is their highest in T20Is, surpassing their 218/4 v England in the 2007 World Championship. It is also the highest in any T20I’s second innings, surpassing 236/6 by WI v SA in 2015. And it is the highest losing total in any T20I, surpassing SA’s 231/7 in the match against WI in 2015 mentioned earlier. And WI and India made the 3rd and 4th highest T20I totals in today’s match. All these details can be seen below:

Coming to individual scores: After todays’s match, 22 centuries in T20Is have been made by 20 players (Gayle and McCullum making two centuries apiece).

Of these 20, as many as 12 have made centuries in all three formats.

They are: Watson, McCullum, du Plessis, Gayle, Ahmed Shehzad, Rahul, RG Sharma, Dilshan, Tamim, Guptill, Raina and Jayawardene. And Rahul’s individual score is the highest in T20Is in the US, for what it is worth.

Interestingly, some of those listed above have never played in Tests or even ODIs. An extreme case is that of E Lewis who had played one T20I (without scoring much) before this and no ODI or Test.
